Artisanal Refinishing for Your Colorado Home's Exterior

Abrasive media blasting: an introduction

Over time, paint or stain finishes on your home will eventually stop performing (see selecting the right stain for your exterior staining project). Failures in paint and stain are evident in discoloration, dull appearances, or outright chipping and peeling. Waiting too long to maintain the original look of your home can either become very costly or drastically change the appearance. You must remember the more stain you apply over the top of another layer, the closer you come to having a house that looks “painted.” Refinishing your home is the only way to restore it to its natural beauty and continue to have your home looking as mountainously vibrant as its surroundings. This is why our partners and Front Range Painters offer all homeowners the complete package for refinishing log cabins, D-shaped log siding, and any other wood surface.

We offer a more efficient, artisanal refinishing product

The complete removal of any finish is a tedious and sometimes overwhelming project to take on, whether you are a seasoned contractor or a DIYer. Very often chemical strippers, power washing, or mechanical/hand sanding create a bigger mess with uncertain results, turning your project into a complete waste of your valued time. Surface preparation done by homeowners or others that claim they have 20 or 30 years of experience with a media blaster from Harbor Freight cannot compare to the expertise brought to any project by true professionals with the right equipment and knowledge.

As professionally trained experts we understand the special needs of log cabins, D-shaped log siding, and any other wood surface. Our partners and Front Range Painters use eco-friendly, abrasive media and state-of-the-art abrasive blasting equipment combined with some of the best stain products on the market. We have personally used and recommend products from Messmers, Sashco, and Proluxe (formerly known as Sikkens), which are specifically designed for harsh, alpine environments.

What is abrasive media blasting?

Abrasive media blasting is the process of removing a finish, such as paint or stain, from a surface by use of compressed air mixed with sand-like granules ejected from a heavy-duty nozzle. These granules, or media, attack the finish and break it apart from the surface, leaving behind a fresh and clean result. The old finish is pulverized into micro granules, which makes cleaning up much easier than chemical or water stripping.

Eco-friendly media options

Nobody likes a chemical mess! Using thinners, stripping chemicals, or even pressure washing can result in the old finish mixing with the environment, besides often producing horrible results. Our partners use 100% silica-free crushed recycled glass, both in a medium or fine grit abrasive. Appearing like beach sand, these granules are easy to clean up or can mix with soil near the prepped surface, causing no damage to vegetation or animals.

Corn cob media, a popular form of media most are familiar with in the log home and cabin circles, can actually be a problem. Due to the nature of corn cob media, it can expand with moisture and hurt the profile of your wood surface if it makes its way into cracks and crevices, which can often be extremely difficult to remove. Furthermore, it can lead to wood rot from the inside out. Our partners and Front Range Painters use eco-friendly media options as well as low VOC (volatile organic compound) EPA compliant products to keep our customers safe without sacrificing the protection of your home and its surroundings.

The powerhouse for artisanal refinishing

Check out this media blasting rig! This is definitely not your Harbor Freight machine. The Dustless Blaster DB500XL, though it appears intimidating, is quite the soft-sounding surface prep powerhouse. This state-of-the-art compressor and blast pot, with their sound suppressor technology, means quieter operations around the project site. This abrasive blasting rig is quieter than a pressure washer to give perspective.

Ultimately, don’t do it yourself

How much do you value your time? Taking on a refinishing project requires an extreme amount of time if done by the homeowner with absolutely no guarantee of the result. How much would a refinishing project interfere with your every day life: work, marriage, kids, hobbies, other projects?

Let’s assume you are ambitious and really want to save yourself thousands of dollars and are willing to endure the final result, whatever that may be. Using chemical strippers or sanding mechanically or by hand will take weeks if not months. Trust us, Front Range Painters knows!
