It is important to note that stained homes need regular maintenance. If stain is not reapplied every so often, increased costs to protect your siding is inevitable. There are various stages of failure to look for on your home’s exterior:

• At Stage 1 you might see nails coming out, boards loosening, and cracks in the trim, particularly at joints and where the trim meets the siding.
• At Stage 2 you might see peeling or faded stain, exposed siding, dry rot, and an overall failure of the siding. At this stage, the house is susceptible to damage from hail, wind, and heavy rain. When oil-based stain reaches its end of useful protection, you'll notice fading. With water-based stain, you'll see peeling.

• Always beginning the project with a full exterior pressure wash
• Resetting loose boards and applying caulk where needed
• Applying 3-4 coats of stain on the sides with the most sun exposure and 1-2 coats on unencumbered areas 
• Back-brushing and back-rolling the entire house to allow for better penetration
• sealing up the cracks, where applicable, to prevent snow from settling and destroying the wood
• Preventing water from getting into cracks as much as possible, which would further exacerbate moisture damage

Well, that is a great question and It’s important to note that a home’s protection should never exceed the recommended time that a stain provides, typically between 2-5 years depending upon weather, product and substrate conditions.
